Ten thousand of any one thing is a lot. For instance, 10,000 jelly beans are a lot of jelly beans, filling over (two) one-gallon jars. Counting out 10,000 pennies takes a considerable amount of time. They are heavy too; 10,000 pennies come in around 55 pounds. However knocking at 10,000 different household doors is quite an accomplishment, as one must not only knock at every door and speak, but also one must first walk up to each and every door.
Fifth Assembly District Candidate Craig Fletcher has done just that — he’s knocked on over 10,000 doors in an effort to introduce himself to the people and leave some campaign literature. It’s not an easy feat and has taken well over a year.
Timing is everything, and it’s often with a little trepidation that a candidate knocks on the door of a private home to not only introduce oneself, but listen to any questions or view points of the members of the household. Some folks are just not home, others too busy to take a moment to chat, and some exhibit a bit of animosity towards political candidates, but those who have talked with Fletcher have been quite interested in sharing their thoughts, in what can only be described as a politically vibrant campaign year.
It can only benefit both candidate and the general electorate when the old-fashioned way of campaigning — that of going door-to-door — is used, along with newer methods of campaigning, as in the use of the Internet.
Fletcher speaks for only a few minutes at each door to get a short message across and that is Wisconsin needs to return to responsible governance, bring businesses back to Wisconsin by forming a better business climate through tax cuts and reducing regulations, and eliminate redundant and unnecessary programs. Fletcher stated, “Our leaders have made too many poor decisions that have resulted in lost jobs and lost businesses across the state. It is time to return to a sustainable government and start moving in the right direction again.”
